Can you visit the Burj Khalifa without a ticket?

You can visit everything around it, but not the observation decks. The decks need a ticket; the tower, Burj Park, the lake promenade and the Dubai Fountain can be enjoyed from outside without one.

The At the Top entrance is inside The Dubai Mall, which is open to everyone, but the exhibition, the lifts and the decks beyond the ticket check need an At the Top ticket. The tower's other spaces are not open for casual visits either: At.mosphere on level 122 is a restaurant with its own booking, the Armani Hotel on the lower floors has been closed for renovation since April 2026 (reopening is expected in 2027), and the apartments are private homes.

Outside, almost everything is open to everyone. The table below sums up what needs a ticket and when each sight is at its best. Most of it fits into one evening: arrive before sunset, walk through Burj Park, watch two or three fountain shows from different places, and finish with the tower lit up after dark.

Where is the best place to watch the Dubai Fountain?

On the lake promenade in front of The Dubai Mall, on the bridge to the Souk Al Bahar, or at the edge of Burj Park. All three are open to everyone; arrive 10 to 15 minutes before a show for a place at the railing.

The Dubai Fountain plays on Burj Lake at the foot of the tower. In the evening it runs every 30 minutes from 6 pm to 11 pm, every day. There are also two afternoon shows: 1 pm and 1:30 pm from Saturday to Thursday, and 2 pm and 2:30 pm on Friday. During Ramadan the schedule changes, with later evening shows, so check the official Dubai Fountain page on the day. Each show lasts a few minutes and the music often changes from one show to the next, so staying for two or three shows is worthwhile. The fountain reopened in October 2025 after an upgrade with new lighting, sound and choreography.

The promenade in front of the mall is the classic spot, closest to the music and busiest. The bridge to the Souk Al Bahar puts the tower directly behind the jets, the best angle for photos, and it fills early. The edge of Burj Park is calmer, with more space for families. The restaurants on the terraces of the mall and the Souk Al Bahar also overlook the lake, if you prefer to watch from a table.

Are the Fountain Boardwalk and the abra ride worth it?

Yes, if you want to be closer than the promenade allows. The boardwalk takes you out onto the lake within about 9 m of the jets, and the 30-minute abra ride lets you watch a show from the water.

Both are ticketed extras, and both change the experience more than you might expect. The Dubai Fountain Boardwalk is a 272 m walkway floating on Burj Lake. From there you feel the spray and the sound much more strongly than from the shore, and you see the tower rising straight above the jets. It runs during the evening shows and is a good choice for photographers and for children who love the fountain.

The abra ride uses a traditional wooden boat, the kind still used to cross Dubai Creek, with at most six people on board. It lasts about 30 minutes and is timed so that a fountain show plays while you are on the water. Reviewers like the calm pace and the unusual angle on the tower. If you only have one evening, choose one of the two and watch the other shows from the promenade.

What can you see around Downtown Dubai without a ticket?

Burj Park, the lake promenade, the Souk Al Bahar, the Dubai Opera plaza, the Old Town area and Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, plus the aquarium panel and the waterfall inside The Dubai Mall.

• Burj Park: a lawn with palms and flower beds at the foot of the tower, the best place to lie back and look up at all 828 m. It is also used for events, so parts can be fenced off on some dates.
• The lake promenade: the walkway along Burj Lake between the mall, the Souk Al Bahar and Burj Park, lively every evening.
• Souk Al Bahar: an Arabesque-style market building across the lake, with shops, cafés and restaurant terraces facing the tower.
• Dubai Opera plaza: the Dubai Opera building, shaped like a traditional dhow, and the open plaza around it. The official guided tour of the inside is ticketed.
• Old Town: a low-rise area with Arabian-style buildings, courtyards and palm-lined paths by the lake, quieter than the mall.
• The Boulevard: Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard loops around Downtown, with cafés, shade trees and views of the tower from every side.
• The Dubai Mall waterfall: a waterfall several storeys high inside the mall, a popular photo stop.

When does the Burj Khalifa light show happen?

On many evenings after dark, the tower's facade lights up with a light show, usually after the fountain shows have started. The times change often, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed event.

The facade of the Burj Khalifa is covered in LED lights, and on many evenings it plays short light shows with patterns, colours and messages that run up and down the whole height of the tower. The schedule is not fixed: in recent years the shows have usually started in the evening after the first fountain shows, but the times move with the season, special events and maintenance. Around national days, Ramadan, Eid and New Year the tower often shows special designs.

The best place to watch is from the lake promenade or Burj Park, where you see the whole tower and its reflection in the water. You do not need to choose between the fountain and the light show: stay by the lake after sunset and you will usually see both. On New Year's Eve, roads around Downtown close and the official advice is to arrive at The Dubai Mall before 3 pm.

Can you see the Dubai Aquarium without a ticket?

Yes. The aquarium's main tank faces the ground floor of The Dubai Mall behind a huge acrylic panel, and anyone walking through the mall can stand in front of it. The tunnel and the Underwater Zoo are ticketed.

The Dubai Aquarium holds about 10 million litres of water and many thousands of animals, including sharks and rays. Its viewing panel is so large that it once held a Guinness World Records title as the largest acrylic panel, and it forms a wall of the mall's ground floor, so you can watch the fish without a ticket. It is one of the best places in Downtown to cool down on a hot afternoon, and children love it.

The ticketed part adds a walk-through tunnel under the tank, with fish passing over your head, and the Underwater Zoo on the level above. If you plan to go up the tower as well, a combo ticket covers both on the same day, and both are inside the same mall.

The aquarium and At the Top combo adds levels 124 and 125 of the Burj Khalifa to the aquarium tunnel, the Underwater Zoo and the underwater observatory, both on the same day. Both entrances are inside The Dubai Mall, so it is an easy pairing for a family day.

How do you get to the Burj Khalifa by Metro, taxi or car?

Take the Metro Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and walk the air-conditioned Metro Link Bridge, about 820 m and 10 to 15 minutes. Taxis drop you at The Dubai Mall, and drivers park at the Fashion Avenue car park.

• Metro: the Red Line stops at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. From there the Metro Link Bridge, an enclosed, air-conditioned walkway with moving walkways, leads into the mall. It is about 820 m, 10 to 15 minutes at a normal pace. This is the easiest option on busy evenings, when the roads around Downtown are slow.
• Taxi or ride-hailing: ask for The Dubai Mall, Fashion Avenue entrance or Grand entrance. For the fountain, walk through the mall to the lake side.
• Car: leave Sheikh Zayed Road at the 1st interchange and follow Financial Centre Road, as the official directions say. The operator recommends the Fashion Avenue car park.
• Parking: The Dubai Mall uses Salik plate recognition. Parking is charged through Salik after the first 4 hours on weekdays and the first 6 hours at weekends, so check the current rules on the Dubai Mall website.

On big nights, such as New Year's Eve and some public holidays, roads close early and the Metro is the most reliable way in and out.

Where are the best photo spots, and how do you cope with the heat?

The best spots are the Souk Al Bahar bridge, the lake promenade, Burj Park and the Dubai Opera plaza. In the hot months, come after sunset, use the air-conditioned mall and Metro Link Bridge, and carry water.

For the whole tower in one frame, you need distance or a wide lens. Burj Park gives you the lawn and palms in the foreground, best at sunset when the facade turns pink and gold. The Souk Al Bahar bridge lines up the tower with the fountain jets during a show. The lake promenade gives you reflections after dark, and the Dubai Opera plaza shows the tower from a quieter angle across the water. Please ask before you photograph other people, and leave drones at home: flying one over Downtown needs official permits.

From June to September the heat outside is intense in the daytime, so plan outdoor time for the evening and spend the afternoon indoors in the mall or at the aquarium panel. Carry water, wear a hat and light clothes, and rest in the shade of the Boulevard's trees. In winter, from November to March, the evenings are mild and pleasant, and the lakeside is at its best.
